External factors affect the value and the quality of jewelry, especially diamonds. For an average person, a gem looks like just any other gem. But to the experienced eye, he knows the differences between a rare stone to one that is not-so-rare.

Therefore, we strongly recommend jewelry enthusiasts to have a keen eye on what is authentic to what is fraud. They should also be on their toes when it comes to the fraudulent practices involving jewelry. They should know the facts of the stones and verify it with the experts.

Switching the Stones - Stone switching often occurs and this is very disturbing for the buyer because the jewelry loses its value. It is also hard to make accusations because the jeweler can deny easily deny the allegations if the buyer does not have proof.

There are jewelers who take advantage of naive customers who do not pay close attention to the gems they are buying. 3. If the buyer has a diagram or the photograph of the gemstone, he must ask the jeweler if this can serve as a good enough representation of the product.

4. Clean the gem before it is repaired or appraised. By examining the stone and remembering the condition that it is in, you will be able to recognize it after it is given back to you.

5. Be very wary of jewelers whose repair services are of low prices. If its too good to be true, it probably is. Maybe this jeweler has no experience. Then again, give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he is just honest.

6. If possible, establish an ethical relationship with your jeweler so that he will be more trustworthy. This can also lessen the chances of switching.

A Gem with Laser Inscriptions - If you are lucky to get gem stones that have laser inscription, then this can be a feature which will help you be aware whether the stone has been switched. Whenever you take the stone to any repair shop or store, tell the person there that the gem has a laser inscription. You can also ask them to examine it under the microscope so that you and the person both agree.

Whilst on a sojourn to the beautiful West Sussex Town of Arundel, I was seated in a caf and chanced upon two deaf German tourists communicating by Sign Language. Now whilst this may not have been an unusual sight in itself, what made it somewhat remarkable for me was that not four tables further down, there was a small group of deaf English visitors, likewise communicating by Sign Language; this lead me to ponderwas Sign Language actually a foreign language or an international one?

To qualify it as an international language, I wondered whether it was in some respects like the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs each gesture being an ideographic sign that would be instinctively recognised everywhere regardless of the countrythat was not the case, however, but it did lead me to wonder whether through their combination of hand shapes, hand orientation, body movements and facial gestures, they could nevertheless be understood internationally?

I felt that I was almost on the right track, as I found that users of sign language from different countries find communication between themselves easier than their aurally blessed counterparts. Here my international theory fell apart thoughaside from this flimsy qualification, it is known that for the most part, there are no standard international signs and that sign users from multiple foreign countries have no commonly based language between them.

Sign Language is not then international. So is it a foreign language?

We may be closer to the mark with this question. Firstly, sign languages, from whatever country, have been verified by professional linguists as having all the necessary linguistic components to be classed as a true separate language.

Secondly, although there is no real relation as such between signed languages and the spoken languages of the countries in which they originate, they grow in parallel with these languages and over time tend to maintain their spheres of influence in the same areas as the spoken languages that they grow alongside with, thus, each spoken language will have a sign language counterpart. If you were to get some expert corroboration, say from some UK translations agencies, they would verify that this does not, really constitute a true separate foreign language.

So where does this leave us?

Sign language is not truly an international language.

Sign Language is a separate language to, but closely parallel to, the spoken language in the land that it originates from. This is found to be the case wherever it occurs.

Because of the proven relationship mentioned above, it is logical to discount the foreign language theory.

I would suggest that Sign Language is best thought of as a form of dialect of our own spoken language. If the proposal sits uncomfortably with some, because of the nature of signing as opposed to verbal communication, then maybe an illustration would be in order; take a Scotsman from the Kintyre area and then similarly take a signerput them together with a broad East Anglian and you will see that the dialect of each might be equally unintelligible and the fact that a signer is using non verbal communication does not detract from the fact that these are parallel modes of communication, and thus, dialectic.

Ask any of your sales managers to define sales strategy and you might get a myriad of responses. Some right, some wrong and many just vague. Ask them to define operational effectiveness and you will tend to get more accurate answers depending on the level of the manager.

Strategy is the what direction of the organization. Organizational effectiveness is the how how you are getting there. The problem is that if your strategy is unclear, vague or downright wrong it doesnt matter in the long term how effective you are as an organization sooner or later you will fail due to any number of outside forces:

- competition
- the economy
- technology
- consumer changes in attitudes
- the global market place
- an aging population

Think of it as a matrix; Draw a four quadrant box. Along the top put Strategy down the left side put operational effectiveness. Therefore;

The lower left hand box is low operational effectiveness and a vague or no strategy.
The upper left hand box is high operational effectiveness but poor or no strategy.
The lower right hand box is low operational effectiveness but clear and focused strategy.
The upper right hand box is clear and focused strategy and operational effectiveness.

We could go on for pages discussing the various consequences and outcomes depending on which your organization is function in. Lets instead summarize a critical factor in this illustration, which is not the quadrant you are currently in but the direction you are moving. In other words if you are in the lower right (your strategy is clear but you lack operational effectiveness) but because of your clear strategy you are becoming better at your operational effectiveness, overall, you are moving in the right direction. However if you are in the upper left hand quadrant (high operational effectiveness but unclear or
changing strategy) and because of your lack of clear direction you are becoming less operationally effective you are moving in the wrong direction.

Granted, no organization will ever stay in the same quadrant indefinitely. There are just too many forces at work here such as changes in management, emerging competitors, a fluxing economy and the rapid pace of change in the are of technology.

It is possible however to stay healthy in both areas and the key is to let your operational effectiveness be driven by your strategy. Herein lies the problem in many organizations today. Management tends to focus more on their operational effectiveness than developing and maintaining a clear, focused and communicated strategy and direction. Sure, many organizations have monthly or yearly strategic planning meetings. I have facilitated dozens during the past few years. And the biggest challenge at these meetings is to keep the focus on developing a strategy (The What) and not get bogged down in lengthy operational effectiveness (The How) discussions that are doomed to fail without a clear and integrated strategy.

I would like to state that not all debt collectors are bad debt collectors. Most debt collectors are good people doing a tuff job. But that said there are many dishonest collection firms out there. And when youre in debt the last thing you want is to be hounded by unscrupulous people trying to get as much money out of you as they can. Any way they can.

Your best defense against dishonest collection firms is knowledge. As the saying goes knowledge is power. I my self have been the victim of Identity theft and have had to deal with a couple of unruly collection firms in my day. So this article talks about some of the things I learned along the way.

First off you should know that the law is on your side. That is the side of the consumer. Federal and state laws are written to protect you from collection scams, dishonest collection firms, protect your privacy and make sure you are treated decently.

Most likely the first question on your mind is how can I stop the phone calls. Yes, you can stop the phone calls. All you need to do to stop the phone calls is to send a letter to the collection firm asking them to stop. It is that simple. According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act once a debt collector receives your letter they can not contact you except to say they will stop contacting you or to let you know they intend to take a specific action like a law suite. You should remember that just because they stop calling does not mean that the debt goes away. Its still there, they just stop calling.

Being in debt can be embarrassing. Most people are not eager to have there friends or family member know that they have fallen behind. In general state and federal laws prohibit debt collectors from talking to other people about your debt. In some cases a debt collector can contact other people but only to find out where you live, what your phone number is, and where you work. In general debt collectors are not allow to talk about your debt to other people except your lawyer or with your permission. Debt collectors are also prohibited from contacting you while you are at work if they know that you cant take calls at work.

The next thing I would like to talk about is harassment. Harassment is when a debt collector threatens you, uses obscene language or repeatedly uses the telephone to annoy you. All of these activities are illegal. In these cases it is best that you requested by letter that the agency stop contacting you. If they continue you should file a complete with your states attorney general and the Federal Trade Commission. Your states attorney generals office may even be able to direct you to an advocate who can help guide you through your situation.

Debt collectors are also prohibited from making false statements. A false statement can be when a collector represents or implies that they are attorneys or government representatives or falsely imply that you have committed a crime. A collector is also not allowed to tell you that they are sending you legal forms when they are not legal form or to tell you that forms or paper work are not legal forms when they are. Debt collectors can not tell you that you will be arrested if you do not pay your debt.

Ok so now you have some more knowledge. What can you do with it? First of all you can stop the annoying and sometimes harassing phone calls. You should also know that you can take action against the collection firm.

If you believe that a debt collection agency has violated the law the first thing you should do is to file a complete with your attorney generals office and the Federal Trade Commission. Second you should know that you have the right to sue a collection agency if they have violated that law. You have up to one year after the violation was made to file a law suite. If you win you can receive money for damages plus up to $1,000. You can also recover court costs and any attorneys fees. I am not a lawyer and you should always consult a lawyer before taking any legal action.

Now that you have some more knowledge I hope you will be able to better advocate for your self and help you deal unscrupulous collection firms.

Nevertheless, it is important to find out where the bar is being set and therefore I recommend patronizing your competition and then perhaps interviewing a few customers exiting the store and asking them if that is a good company to do business with. If they say yes, ask them why and if they say no, make sure you find out why and do not do make the same mistakes.

Next do the same thing at your own company, perhaps use a friend as a secret shopper and ask customers if they are happy and why. Then from there start to develop a better customer service program and you will be glad you did. Consider all this in 2006.

TEFL or Teaching English as Foreign Language is an increasingly popular way to travel overseas. TEFL (also known as TESOL) affords the opportunity to earn a living while traveling which helps to lessen the costs of what was has become, for most, a necessary but increasingly expensive desire. The advantage with TEFL as opposed to other employment and travel options overseas is the immediate opportunity teachers have to immerse themselves in new cultures, more often than not what most want from their experience overseas but often difficult to obtain. As an English teacher you will be a respected part of the local community. As a result, windows of social opportunities within new cultures, often closed to outsiders, will continually open to you. In addition, and probably best of all, TEFL offers the opportunity to help and enrich the lives of others through education.

English is quickly becoming the world language of communication. As the need to learn English increases as does the need for teachers to teach this language. In times past the simple requirement to teach English as a foreign language was that the applicant be a native or fluent English speaker, no qualifications required. As the demand for teachers has increased, most employers now require applicants to have formal qualifications. Generally, the type of qualifications required, reflect the financial status of the country. For example, employers in Japan or Italy require that applicants have a degree in any field and are TEFL certified, while employers in say Cambodia or Chile only require applicants to be TEFL certified.

There are a number of TEFL training companies to choose from, some good and some not so good. When choosing a TEFL course provider you should ascertain whether the provider is accredited by an external examining body, if it is then the course and qualification awarded will be recognized and accepted internationally.

Check to see if the course provides teaching practice with actual students of English and that the teaching English as a foreign language course itself involves at least 100hrs of training. Other criteria to consider is the course materials, content of the course and course structure.

Once you have chosen a TEFL course provider the application procedure is fairly simple and quick. The only criteria for being eligible to undertake a TEFL course being that the applicant is a native or near native English speaker. Post application, often a deposit payment is a requirement to secure a place on a course with the balance of course fees being payable at the beginning of the course itself.

TEFL: Teaching English as a Foreign Language, once the bastion of groovy back packers with a mission, is now the stable path for graduates dearly looking for life and travel experience, for those unhappy with the politicians and environment of their home country and wanting to start again in a new location free from all the nonsense, for retirees wanting to make amends for a working life that was a necessity rather than a choice and for those unhappy with their jobs and wanting a new challenge in a job that gives back a lot more than a salary. There are now more and more people from all walks of life considering TEFL and teaching English as a foreign language as a very possible alternative to their current status. With the situation as it stands now, there are not enough qualified teachers to cater to the worldwide demand for English, so fortunately this is better news for those wishing to learn English.

The original residents of Nantucket Island were Wampanoag Indians, who lived there undisturbed until 1641 when the island was deeded by the English to Thomas Mayhew and his son, who were merchants of Watertown and Marthas Vineyard.

Europeans began to settle in the area around Cape Cod and the island became a place of refuge for regional Indians. Nantucket was not yet discovered by white men.

In 1659 Thomas Mayhew sold his interest to the nine original purchasers for the sum of thirty Pounds and two beaver hats (one for himself and one for his wife).

The first white settlement occurred on the small sheltered harbor of Capaum Pond on the north shore. The settlement was called Sherburne. In 1795, the town now nestled on the Great Harbor was named Nantucket, which means faraway land in Wampanoag. Nantucket became unique in the country as an island, a county and a town all with the same name.

For almost 100 years, the island was the whaling capital of the world (the mid-1700s to the late 1830s). There were as many as 150 ships making port in Nantucket during its peak. The new wealth from whale oil drastically took a turn upon the advent of petroleum in 1838 when it began to replace whale oil as an illuminant, and the sperm whale was harder to find. In addition, in 1846, a great fire roared through Nantucket Town at night leaving hundreds homeless and in poverty.

Gold was discovered in California. Shiploads of people from Nantucket, Massachusetts left to seek after gold fortunes. Whaling was officially over in Nantucket. The last ship to leave Nantucket in search of the giant sperm whale left in 1869 and never returned.

Commercial shipping gave way to recreational boating at the end of the whaling era. Summer visitors began to pour into Nantucket for daily excursions from the mainland on the graceful old steamers. The first generation to enjoy these excursions spoke of pure air and saltwater bathing for health and pleasure. They began to build cottages and summer houses and advertised them for rent and for sale in the Boston and New York newspapers. The Nantucket Island housewives began taking in summer boarders. Grand hotels were built in the town and on the seashore at Brant Point, Surfside, and Siaconset.

The American tradition of summer vacations was firmly established around the year of 1880. At this time, Nantucket Island, Massachusetts was discovered as just about the most ideal spot for a vacation. Soon tourism became the principle source of income for island residents, and it still is today. Visitors to Nantucket, Massachusetts are also attracted by the quiet beauty of the off-season, and are assured of finding comfortable accommodations at any time of the year.
