For Centuries the only source known to man for diamonds were rivers. They were found in active rivers or in the beds of rivers long ago dried up. In 1871 diamond pipes were discovered in South Africa. They were mined from kimberlite and lamproite volcanic pipes. Magma in these pipes brought the diamond crystals to the surface from deep in the earth. These crystals were formed by temperature and high pressure. Volcanic pipes are the primary source for diamonds.

The most commercially viable diamonds mines of today are found in Canada, Russia,
Australia, Botswana, The Democratic Republic of Congo and Siberia. Diamond miners are always searching for new rich diamond deposits the world over. Unfortunately, diamond mining is practically non-existent in the United States except for small deposits in Arkansas and Colorado.

In some of the unstable countries of Africa, revolutionary groups have taken over control of some of the diamond mines. They use the profits from the sale of the diamonds to finance their revolutionary goals. Blood Diamonds is the term used for diamonds mined and sold in this way. The Kimberly Process was brought about in 2002 by The United Nations, the diamond industry and countries who buy diamonds, to fight against these blood diamonds. The Kimberly Process ensures that diamonds exported from these countries are documented and certified and are not mined and acquired in this way. Only a small amount of these blood diamonds are able to slip through due to this process.

The actual removal of the diamond ore at a kimberlite mine site, starts with the opening of a pit at the source of the pipe. The ore is then removed with hydraulic shovels and ore trucks. Hard rock is drilled and explosives are used to break it up so it can be removed. Vertical shafts are often used as well when there is a rich ore deposit. Passageways are made to branch off from the shaft so no ore is missed. This is just one type of mining.

After the ore is removed from the mine is it processed or sorted. One method of sorting is by using a wash pan. This method allows the heaviest diamond ore to settle on the bottom and the waste material goes to the top. Density separations may be achieved by using cones and cyclones, grease tables, and x-ray separators. The final separations are done by the human eye.

Even after the sorted diamonds reach their prospective markets, either for jewelry makers or industrial users of diamonds, they are sorted even more. The quality of a rough diamond finally determines what it will ultimately be used for.

When I recently published this true story of love, there was such a quick response from readers, between two friends who had met 50 years ago, in their first year of college and marry and live happily ever after, until he recently died. Since I had known him more than forty years, there are more touching stories about this prince of a man and his beautiful wife. They lived healthy lifestyles and so do their children now.

I wondered for a while what if was that made this story resonate so quickly. And as I read what had been to me a simple story about good men and good lives creating good legacy, and I gradually came to see how you might feel, hearing her words as she told me that story. Her dear gentleman husband, my close friend, would never have shared with me, to not cause discomfort to that other chap.

And my AHA moment about this story is that it seems a bit like why women enjoy the century old story of red headed Anne Shirley, the strong willed girl from Prince Edward Island, who broke her blackboard over the head of a lad, and finally choose who she would marry. And help him make up his mind he loved her.

Women admire perhaps our modern more beautiful, but fully independence: a clever fellow pulls up beside her and begins to chat him up. She sends him off with a message to her true love; he obliges quicker than she ever might had dreamed. Within hours, she and her dream prince are out for a drive in the country in the new car his father had happened to allow to him to borrow that day. Soon, he would present her with but not today.

But since there was interest, I think in the story, I will tell another story about about this true story of love, let you enter any names you wish so I do not feel I betray any soul to soul confidence. But this is as good as it does get, from the many couples I have met in my adult life, and it bears reminding me, and you, about light heart, eternal love, that kept being stoked, Women admire perhaps her independence: a clever fellow pulls up beside her and begins to chat him up. She knows he is asking to ask her out. She gently leans towards him, put her hand on his arm, and points to the only man in the class she wants to date.

And she points at her future husband, who she has not met. They now have three beautiful grown children. I miss his radiant smile and sturdy handshake. Anyway, after that long drive in the country, he did not drive her down to the jewelry store and pick out a ring.

But he did drive her home, went in and met her parents, who approved, and they went to several movies, picnic in the park, walk by the sea. He made his first offering in front of a jewelry store, when he saw her admiring some earrings: he proudly bought them, her blushing that was not necessary as he placed it slowly, lovingly, around her lovely neck.

One day, as they came of the movie, the jewelry store was open, and were having a sale on necklaces. He insisted, she blushed. He loudly announced to the staff and startled customers that his bride was going to be dressed like Helen of Troy with every raise and promotion. She turned purple and stumbled out: says she does not recall what the movie was about.

Not too long longer, the jewelry store had a special, just for them, on Diamond Rings, Engagement and Marriage.They enjoyed a full, rich, in the full sense of love and respect for each other and from the community at large. Some of the earlier types of cuts include the emerald and the round but these days they is a great variety to choose from and some of them are quite expensive.

One of the most popular cuts is known as the round brilliant cut which was first done in the 1600s in Venice, Italy. This is still the premier cut when the raw diamond is in an octahedron shape. Sometimes half of the stone gets cut away when shaping a diamond but in many cases two stones can be created from one octahedron. Raw stones that have more unusual shapes are usually reserved for fancier cuts like heart shapes and the marquis cut. The first brilliant cuts only had 17 facets and were called double cut but the process was rapidly improved to 33 facets which led to the stones being referred to as triple cut brilliants.

By the 1800s many new innovations came about in the diamond industry due to in large part, much better tools for cutting the precious stones. By the early 1900s a jeweler by the name of Tolkowsky took things a step further by marrying the talent of cutting stones to the study of light and refraction which resulted in much more beautiful diamonds. He also authored a book that was very popular called Diamond Design. His work led to much of the modern methods of diamond cutting we see today and also encouraged the mathematical approach that is taken today that goes so far to create more fiery and brilliant stones we now see.
