Professional Translation vs Free Online Translation

When faced with a foreign language document that has landed upon our desk, unless fairly proficient in the source language, many of us will be temporarily taken aback. Whether we have a basic knowledge of the language or none at all, we will then be faced with a choice - whether to opt for a free online translation or a professional translation.

An online translation can be a legitimate aid to linguistic decipherment. It is especially useful in instances where one already has a basic knowledge of the source language but not quite enough to translate the entire corpus of the text.

In most cases, a simple substitution of words from one language to another carried out by the online translator, although very mechanical in its output (being as it is, a dictionary based word substitution), will enable one to use existing knowledge combined with previously unknown translated words, to arrive at a satisfactory approximation of the whole.

With previous knowledge of a language one is able to bypass the main weakness of online translation engines; as previously mentioned many of the translation engines algorithms carry out a dictionary based translation. As you can imagine though, this might not always produce a translated output with regard to the many tenses, conjugations or cases (e.g. nominative, accusative and dative), common to most foreign languages. In these cases only a prior knowledge of a language will enable one to isolate the root verb or case components in order to arrive at an alternate form to input into the engine.

Even with no prior linguistic knowledge, online translations are very often more than sufficient to give one at least an inkling of a texts meaning; a major attraction of online translations though, is that an online translation is free and for many businesses and private individuals, a free approximation of a text suffices well enough.

There are of course, circumstances where an approximate translation is not acceptable and in these instances, you are best advised to take up the services of a company that can provide professional document translation services.

One such circumstance is when attempting to translate an English document into another language. This is invariably done for business purposes and as with everything that a company produces, its quality, or lack thereof, will directly reflect upon your business reputation.

The other obvious circumstance where only a professional translation is acceptable is whenever any type of legal, financial, medical, technical or business critical translation is required. The bottom line with these types of documents is that anything other than a clear and accurate translation that conveys not only the documents meaning but also the original intent behind the text is a sure road to business disaster.

In summary, it can be fairly said that; if a linguistic guesstimate will suffice, then an online translation will see you through. For anything that really matters though, you had best seek the services of a professional translator!

TEFL Visits Stonehenge Mysteries

TEFL Visits Stonehenge Mysteries Not far from where I teach is a World Heritage site Stonehenge. Most people who visit us from overseas have heard of it, seen pictures, and are keen to visit. Actually its a pile of stones in the middle of a field a few miles from Salisbury. The stones were erected a few thousand years ago by people with no diggers, cranes or tractors, using stones dragged from South Wales, a couple of hundred miles or more to the west. The thing about the pile of stones is their mystery the fact that we really dont know anything about them at all. Sure, they are very old, and they are positioned in a way that suggests our ancestors were excellent astronomers, but at the end of the day they are a mysterious, atmospheric, compelling pile of rocks! I like to take students there (preferably walking there, even though its less than ten minutes in the car) and tell stories.

In the telling of stories, trying to unravel mystery lays the root of language. The technique is as valid now for Teaching English as a Second Language as it has always been for teaching children their first. Stonehenge certainly sparks conversation, questions, and the need for language, from simple questions how old is it?, what is it for? Why was it built? Whats the big deal? to more advanced discussion about the sun and the moon, mans need to worship, and the whys and wherefores of English Heritage! As ever, the trip outside the traditional classroom stimulates interest in the student, and makes for a great lesson in the great outdoors. Teacher where can you take your students today?

Spanish Made Easy - Unlocking Hidden Knowledge Part 2

Do you realize that you already know hundreds, if not thousands, of Spanish words? In this second of two articles we will highlight the way in which the English and Spanish languages share hundreds of words, words that you will be able to use every day.

In the first article we looked at the words are identical in both languages, identical in spelling and meaning, this time we will look at words which are spelled slightly differently but are so close as to be easily usable.

No “TH” In Spanish.

If you come across a word that looks familiar but is subtly different it may be a victim of “missing H syndrome”. You will hardly ever get the letters T and H together in Spanish, so words in Spanish that look unfamiliar may be more obvious when an H is added . Examples of this include; Cathedral comes from catedral, thesis from tesis, marathon from maraton, thermal from termal and autor is author, I bet you can guess what matematico is? See, Spanish can be easy!

The th sound is replaced by a flat t sound as in cat.

No “TION” In Spanish.

As well as having no TH words, Spanish has no words that end in TION. So instead of edition we have edicion, the T is replaced by a C. when armed with this fact its makes it easy to work out what these words mean; atencion, asociacion, coleccion, adicion, and combinacion.

There are obvious but slight changes in some of the spellings but knowing what to look for will help you identify words.

The sound of the word changes as well as the spelling, the sh sound of a word like edition, changes to a thee sound in edicion.

Adding A Vowel.

There many easy Spanish words that differ from the English version by only one letter, that letter is a vowel and it comes at the end of a word. This is because the Spanish language assigns a gender to lots of words, if the gender is male the word ends in O, if the gender is female it ends in A.

So a Spanish word like apartamento, is obviously apartment, it has been given the masculine ending. Other similar words are; bulbo (bulb), busto (bust, as in sculpture), cataclismo (cataclysm), concepto (concept), candidato (male candidate) and producto (product).

The same rule applies to words ending in A, they have been given the feminine ending, words like; acrobata (acrobat), candidata (female candidate), diagrama (diagram), epica (epic), ilusionista (illusionist) and planeta (planet).

As shown above words like candidate when Spanish can end in either O or A depending on the person being described, but that should not stop you realizing what the word is.

Thanks for taking the time to read this article, no language rules are ever 100% but Spanish is a quite well defined language so hopefully these few tips should make it a little bit easier to learn Spanish.

How Does Rocket Spanish Compare To The Rosetta Stone Learn Spanish Course

There are many self study courses around that teach you how to speak Spanish. Some are good and some are not so good. This article will compare two popular self study courses - Rocket Spanish and Rosetta Stone.

Rocket Spanish

Rocket Spanish and Rosetta Stone have different teaching methods. Rocket Spanish is a more traditional learning course that uses familiar methods to teach.

This includes an audio component. Two people take you through a series of situations. One is an English speaker, the other native South American Spanish. The English speaker controls the lesson and asks you questions. The native Spanish speaker does all the Spanish speaking and answers questions. They encourage you to repeat the words or sentences after the Spanish speaker. This is a pretty useful course and will give you confidence in your comprehension and spoken Spanish.

There is also an ebook that has a series of lessons on the Spanish language. This aims to teach you vocabulary, grammar, reading and written Spanish. There are tests at the end of each lesson in the ebook.

Rocket Spanish also has a few games that teach you vocabulary and comprehension skills. These are called MegaVocab, MegaAudio and there are some flash cards that you can print out and make your own games with. They are pretty good for learning these skills. MegaVocab can be customized to add you own words and pictures so that it can be a massive game if you want it to be.

They have good support for their product. They have a forum where you can ask questions and talk to people at all levels of the Spanish. They send out fresh lessons every fortnight for a few months.

Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone uses something they call dynamic immersion. This is a completely different approach to learning a language. The theory is that you learn as you learned your native language via sight, sound and validation. Four pictures are put onto the screen and a word or sentence is spoken. You have to guess which picture relates to the words. This is how we learned as a baby. Your native language is never spoken and you learn by immersing yourself in this process.

They use this method for comprehension, vocabulary and writing practice. There is also a speech analysis component where you can match your pronunciation with that of a native Spanish speaker. They have a Spanish and South American versions of the course.

Summary

I think both courses have a place in the Spanish self study market.

Rocket Spanish aims to be more versatile. For instance, the audio course can be played as an mp3 anywhere at anytime. They also aim to be responsive to their customers via the forum and updated lessons sent to an email address every so often.

Rosetta Stone is a very slick program that has excellent production values. The pictures and photographs are excellent quality and the software works smoothly. The method they employ is a painless way to learn a language, much like you learned your mother tongue.

Rocket Spanish is a one off course that represents good value for money. Rosetta Stone comes in three parts that are fairly expensive but on a par with other high end learn Spanish courses.

Learning to Speak German Computer Software

It used to be a pretty straight forward choice; if you wanted to learn to speak German youd take a class at your local school or community college. However today with the advent of the personal computer and high speed internet connections, there is a whole line of learning to speak German computer software products available.

At first glance, it can look very confusing. With so many choices which one should you purchase? Well, heres a quick rundown of what these systems are all about.

Today, most of the better systems utilize a multi-pronged approach with each element reinforcing and building on the others. This is a vast improvement over classroom learning where youre basically listening to a teacher and taking notes. No, with these systems you can listen to an audio lesson, do some flash card exercises then play a quick game, all from your computer without ever having to worry that youre not keeping up with the rest of your class. Nope youre working at your own pace, when you want to.

These courses all contain some form of audio (a few even use the mp3 format and can be played directly on your Ipod). The audio lessons will teach you the perfect pronunciations of the words and phrases youll be learning. Typically the exact transcriptions are also included so that you can follow along.

Most of the systems include some form of flashcard learning. Flashcards are a time-tested way of reinforcing the words and phrases youve already learned. However, with todays computer software based learning systems, the flashcards are no longer clumsy old cards that youll have to keep track of, no today the flashcards are all stored within your computers hard drive, waiting to be called up whenever you want to practice.

Games are another innovation of the better computer based learning systems. With the games, youre putting your brain into a relaxed state, its a proven fact that when your brain is relaxed, you learn more and retain more information. The games are typically fun and interactive with corrections being displayed right on the screen, immediately.

Another important facet of these learning systems is user support. The better systems incorporate a members only chat board that allows you to contact a German language expert 24 hours a day, seven day a week. This is a major benefit of the better systems and one that needs to be considered if youre in the market for one of these packages.

Finally, cost is another factor that you should consider. These systems run from as little as about $40 to several hundred dollars (US). My favorite system is under $100, and is fully downloadable, meaning you can buy it right now and be learning the language within minutes.

So if youre serious about learning to speak the German Language, you need to consider the various computer software programs that are available. The best ones will help you learn German faster and more efficiently then traditional class room learning.

The Oxford Dictionary Creation and The Future of Language

Have you ever read the encyclopedia? Well, I guess you are not a; know it all, after all? Have you ever read the dictionary? It seems like a boring thing to do but you really should read it, as it is quite good actually. In my life I have read two dictionaries; an abridged Oxford dictionary and a regular dictionary.

It is amazing how the language changes over the years in each society and in each new generation. If you ever want to read a book on the subject, then I recommend; The Meaning of Everything; The story of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester.

What will the future of the English language be? Well, a lot of that depends on professors and scholars and what they consider words, as each year new words are added to the dictionary. But in the information age we have compound words that take on entirely new meanings. We also have industry professionals and consultants creating new words in their fields. Many words that are quite unique and in industry terminology and new industry buzzwords are not in the Oxford dictionary although as time marches on they may actually earn a spot.

But still, what will the future of language be with all this instant messaging and abbreviated words? Our language is evolving and changing whether the professors and Oxford scholars like it or not. Slang is becoming acceptable and hyphenated shortened words are also. Still authors who are popular often invent new words and they are readily accepted if the writer is recognized. The future of language is involving faster than ever before and perhaps you will think of this in 2006.

Learn a New Language - My In-Home Total Immersion Language Program

Full-Immersion Language Programs seem to be the rage when it comes to learning a language. This usually means going abroad to a language school in Spain, Italy, France, Germany, China or Japan. Once in the country, you will be fully immersed in your new language. While there, you will be able to travel around the country in your time-off periods to learn more about the culture and to have the chance to practice your new language skills.

If you have the time and money, this is a wonderful way to learn a language. But most of us are not able to do this. So let me go over some simple ways to have your very own in-home immersion program.

1. Get yourself a good interactive, audio language course of your choice. Pimsleur would be an excellent choice. Listen and respond to the native speakers out loud. Do this everyday for a period of 30 minutes.

2. Go to the library and check out a few music CDs that have music and lyrics in the language you are learning. Listen to these CDs while you are doing things around the house or driving in your car. Try and understand the words and the meaning as you listen.

3. At the newsstand, buy a newspaper or magazine that is written in your chosen language. One paper or magazine will do you for a while. Go through the paper or magazine and read the words and try and figure out what is being discussed.

4. Buy or check-out from the library a large World Atlas. Find the country in which you are learning the language and look at the mountain ranges, rivers, cities and the overall layout of the country and in your mind plan a trip there to see it in person.

5. Buy yourself a nice set of flash cards and learn several new words each day to expand your vocabulary.

6. At the library check out some foreign films in the language you are studying and watch them at home. If you are learning Spanish you can turn on a TV program and listen and try to understand what is being said.

7. Find someone in your area that speaks this language and try and talk with them.

You will find that if you do these things on a regular basis, each day, your rate of understanding will accelerate and you will learn much faster. The more you can interact with others in trying to speak your new language the better and faster you will go. This is the advantage of a full immersion program and this will be your big advantage as you implement your own in-home immersion program.

See a list of discounted Pimsleur courses at PimsleurMethod.com Pimsleur languages courses are a great way to learn on the go. Are you ready to really learn a new language? Try Pimsleur today. Hear a free

Language of the Lens

Paris the most beautiful city in the world, was captured and frozen in time by the great master of photojournalism, Henri Cartier-Bresson, who brought beauty and a new dimension to an ordinary street scene. Photography, he once wrote is a spontaneous impulse which comes from perpetually looking, and which seizes the instant and its eternity.

Henri elevated snap shooting to the level of a refined and disciplined art. He exclusively used the Leica 35mm rangefinder cameras equipped with normal 50mm lenses or occasionally a telephoto for landscapes. He was one of the first photographers to shoot in the 35mm format and helped to develop the photojournalistic “street photography” style that influenced generations of photographers to come. He was the father of the decisive moment, when everything in a picture was entirely balanced.

He often spoke of the geometry of photography. Change your position by a millimetre and the geometry changes, he said. This cannot be calculated but needs to be instinctive, when I start thinking, everythings lost. What counts in a shot is its plenitude and its simplicity.

During his boyhood, Henri experimented with a 3 X 4 view camera. However, his main interest lay in painting. When he was 19, he went to study painting with Andre Lhote, the Cubist master. There he learned about angles, walls and the way things tilt. His still-lifes and Paris street scenes are indicative of his subtle and sensitive eye for composition.

In 1931, at the age of 22, Cartier-Bresson spent a year as a hunter in the West African bush. Catching a case of backwater fever, he returned to France to convalesce. It was at this time, in Marseille, that he first truly discovered photography. He obtained a Leica and began snapping a few pictures, and within a decade, he was famous. The only thing about photography that interests me is the aim, the taking aim. Nothing is lost, he says. All that you have ever seen is always with you.

After World War II, he resumed his career as a photojournalist and helped form the Magnum picture agency in 1947. Assignments for major magazines would take him on global travels, across Europe and the United States, to India, Russia and China. Many books of Cartier-Bresson photographs were published in the 50s and 60s, the most famous being The Decisive Moment (1952). A major milestone in his career was a massive, 400-print retrospective exhibition, which toured the United States in 1960.

As a journalist, Henri Cartier-Bresson felt an intense need to communicate what he thought and felt about what he saw, and while his pictures often were subtle, they were rarely obscure. He had a high respect for the discipline of press photography, of having to communicate a story meaningfully in one picture. His journalistic grappling with the realities of men and events, his sense of news and history, and his belief in the social role of photography all pushed his work beyond the usual boundaries.

His work and his approach have exercised a profound and far-reaching influence. His pictures and picture essays have been published in most of the worlds major magazines during three decades, and Cartier-Bresson prints have hung in the leading art museums of the United States and Europe (his monumental The Decisive Moment show being the first photographic exhibit ever to be displayed in the halls of the Louvre.)

No one captured the language of Paris so profoundly. The incredible grace and movement he bestowed on all his subjects, his attention to detail and powers of observation all came together in one defining moment. Photographs of men in bowler hats, the abattoir workers, the lovers, the drunks, the refugees, the tarts, the judges, the picnickers, the animals and the kids. Not art, he once commented when someone referred to him as an artist, just gut reactions to moments happened on.

Their team of multilingual professionals are consistently praised for their speed and efficiency of service by their clients based in Paris and all around the globe. 4 Tips When Working With An Interpreter

With people from all over the world taking part in business conferences and events, the demand for professional interpreter is getting more and more popular. During these events, language barrier can be a very tough hurdle to get over. In order to communicate effectively, you will need to have an interpreter by your side when attending these business conferences and meetings.

Nowadays with the help of Internet, getting a professional interpreter is not hard at all. You can visit some of the translation agencies to look for the right interpreter for your business trips. By hiring interpreters from translation agencies, you can be sure that they are professional and experienced interpreters. The agencies will also ensure that an interpreter is familiar with your subject matter.

However, working with an interpreter can also bring some unforeseen challenges and problems for you. This is because the aspect of this job can be really stressful for the interpreters. Professional interpreters do not have breaks and they perform their jobs on the spot. So let me share with you what are some of the tips that you should take note of in order to facilitate your working relationship with an interpreter:

1. Communicate clearly with him or her. Clear communication is essential in a good interpreter-client relationship. Make sure you communicate exactly what needs to be translated to the interpreter before the start of the job. You should give him a briefing of what will happen in the meeting. This will help prepare him of what to expect during his work.

2. If you have any materials that have been pre-printed, make sure that your interpreter has time to review and read through it. This will help him to read better in front of a live audience as it will not be the first time he is reading it.

3. Be serious. Things that you find funny in a culture may be something that is offensive in another culture. Therefore, humour is a bad thing when it comes to business translations service. A professional interpreter will know to avoid humour during his or her work.

4. Speak slowly. To help your interpreter, you should speak slowly so that he or she can reiterate exactly what you are saying. If you speak too quickly, your interpreter may feel stressed and this can make the job harder for them. So try to speak slower so as to not hinder the quality of the translation in any way.

These are just a few tips that you can take note of in order to work effectively and efficiently with an interpreter. If you are hiring an interpreter from a respectable translation service agency, you can expect that the interpreter that the agency provides is well-versed in all of the information above.

Best Way To Learn To Speak French

If you have decided to learn French then you have no doubt wondered what is the best way to learn French in the shortest possible time. Everybody wants to be fluent as quickly as possible so that they can enjoy talking to people from another culture and gaining an insight into their lives and lifestyles. This article will highlight the best way to learn to speak French in terms of quality and time it takes to become a capable French speaker.

In my opinion the best way to learn French is by doing a French immersion course. This typically involves going to France and taking a course. As you take the course you may be living and working in France and have constant opportunities to put your learning into the practice by talking to local people or people you come in contact with.

French immersion courses have other advantages. You may be learning about something that you have no real life experience of. For example, you can have the game of Ptanque or boules explained to you but you will never truly understand it until you see the people playing it with the azure sea as a backdrop.

Being able to see, touch, feel and smell the things you are learning about make the understanding so much easier. Only by immersing yourself in the French life can you get this experience.

Immersion courses do not just apply to France either. You can find French immersion courses all over the world. Canada can offer immersion courses with their own particular take on French language and culture. Or you could combine a Caribbean vacation with an intensive immersion course by visiting Martinique. As Martinique is a overseas French department you can get an insight into French culture with a Caribbean twist.

French Immersion is the best way to learn French but is probably the most expensive way of learning French. The other ways to learn French if you do not have the finances or time to go to another country are to do a standard night course at a French Institute or purchase a learn French software course.

If you prefer an alternative to immersion courses or would like to get your feet wet with French before landing in France then a learn French software course is ideal. Visit http://rocketfrenchreview.com/ for a detailed review of the popular language course Rocket French. The course has been updated to include an audio component and you will find a review of this new Rocket French audio course and details of all the other features that it has to offer. You will also find useful tips on how to learn French. Adrian Whittle has learned French and Spanish using various methods and is ideally qualified to review new language courses.
