Mobile Car Wash Companies; Trading Tips

If you run a mobile car washing firm we recommend trading for as many products and services as possible. You should trade for both personal and business items. You need to keep in mind that your gross sales will go down as you do this because money will not be taken in for these services you perform. You will however, notice a significant increase in your standard of living. This is because you will generally end up trading: Wholesale To Wholesale; Retail To Retail; Retail To Wholesale; Wholesale To Retail

In other words, if you trade a pair of shoes which costs the shoe store owner $15.00, which he usually sells for $45.00, for a wash and wax on his car which costs you about $11.50 (including labor, product, soap, eater, etc.) which you usually sell for $50.00, that is wholesale to wholesale. $11.50 of your cost for $15.00 of his costs.

This is the best way to trade. You basically are out your time, which you value at $11.50. The shoe store owner loses nothing because he got a $50.00 wax job for $15.00. Everyone is happy.

Trading retail to retail is by far the easiest. This is trading the $50.00 wax job for a $50.00 pair of shoes. Its really easy to figure out and very easy to sell. Both parties walk away feeling good.

When you trade retail to wholesale, you really come out ahead. For example, if you wash the shoe store owners car three times which equals $15.00 worth of your services at retail for his wholesale cost of $15.00 for the shoes, you really win big. Your cost for three washes is $1.13 times three, which equals $3.39, your actual cost and he gives you a $45.00 pair of Nikes. Excuse me, but this is a great deal. The only problem is that it is too good of a deal, so give a little extra. Wash his managers car and a customer who buys three pairs of shoes while you are there. Tell them Since you are such a good customer of Sams Shoe Store, Im going to give you a free car wash. This makes Sam happy, the customer happy with you and Sam, and Sams manager happy with you and his boss. You will probably end up with four new customers from this deal:

Sam

Sams Manager

Sams Customer

A Referral Customer from one of the three

Now you are ready to drive into the sunset sporting a new pair of Nikes, driving a mobile car wash rig.

Try not to trade wholesale to retail unless you are doing it to kill time or for a family member. If Sam was your father it might be ok to take this scenario: Your cost for a car wash is $1.13. The cost for the Nikes is $45.00. $1.13 divided by $45.00 is 39.82, almost 40. Thats a lot of car washes for a lousy pair of shoes.

Oh well. They are Nikes (the best) and Sam is your father. On second thought, we dont recommend this after all. For instance: $ 5.00 Price Per Car Wash X 40 Number Of Car Washes = $200.00 Total You Would Have Made. You see you could have bought 4.4 pairs of shoes for that amount of money or some really nice expensive cowboy boots.

So, our basic advice is this: Its ok to trade and it makes good sense, but please make sure its a Win/Win situation for every one involved especially the other guy. (Sam)

Networking While Traveling

Networking is more than just putting your business name out there for people to find you, but it is also a part of getting to know people, who are going to spread the word about what you do, what you sell, and that are going to support you in all that you do. Networking is going to involve getting to know as many people in life as you can, and putting your business in front of those people, so they will represent your name, your business, and will tell others about what you have to offer.

If your business requires that you travel often, or perhaps you travel often to find supplies, visit relatives or just because you like it. You should make it a point to get to know those who you are sitting beside, those who are surrounding you on the plane, even those who are sitting on the bench while waiting in the airport. Make it a point to meet and greet at least one new person a day.

How are you going to get started on this?

Start the conversation by saying hello, how are you today?
Ask questions. The best way to get to know someone is to ask questions. Without asking questions, it can be difficult to carry on a conversation. Asking questions is a good icebreaker, in turn, the person is going to want to talk about their self, and where they are traveling too. You can then lead into something like, is this business trip or a personal trip? As you go on with the conversation, the person is going to ask you questions, which is where you will be able to talk about your business and what you do.

As you make it a point to get to know at least one new person a day- you are going to increase your network, which means you will increase the people that you know in life. Increasing your business network is going to be dependent on your abilities to carry on a conversation and to talk with others. Force yourself to do this. Force yourself to stick to your habit of meeting at least one new person a day. As you make this a point, you will make this a habit and in the long run, your business will thrive for it.

The 7 Rules of Networking Made Easy

How many of you think networking is overrated?

I used to think so. Not until recently I started realizing that everything I have (my apartment, my car and my real estate) and everyone I know (my boyfriend, my friends, my colleagues) are all results of my past networking. Networking is a fancy word for building relationship. Most people think networking is planned activities that only happen in a defined space for a short period of time (i.e. drinking champagne in your best outfit at cocktail party for 3 hours talking about nothing). My suspicion is that probably someone in the professional world invented this term just to make it sounds more technical so the introverts would just shy away. My fellow readers dont let this little trick fool you. The true definition of networking is building relationship & rapport with new friends while being yourself anywhere anytime.

Doesnt this sound easy enough?

I know what you are thinking about right now: It is easy for you to say. You are an extrovert! How about the shy bunch like me? It doesnt matter where and when, I am just not comfortable talking to strangers! Trust me I know how you feel. I am an only child and I was very shy as a kid. If you grew up in a city like Hong Kong with 2 working parents, the chances were you would spend a lot of time alone in your tiny apartment. I had a few friends in school yes, but its not that we could go out and play on the street after school. Hong Kong is a big city with almost 7 millions people. Even though the crime rate was (still is) relatively low compared to the US, kids were usually not allowed to leave the house until at least we were 13 or 14. So what did I do home alone before I was 13? Not much! Not until I came to the U.S when I was 16, my situation changed from no one to talk to but I still have my parents to no one to talk to but I really have no one! In extreme situation as such, I was forced to break out of my cocoon. I trained myself to talk, build relationship and make friends.

Here is my 7 Rules of Networking Made Easy:

1) Ask questions. The truth is everyone loves to talk about themselves. When I say ask questions, I dont mean what is your name or what do you do for living types of questions. I meant real questions that bring up the past, the feeling, the experience and passion out of your new friends. Vice versa, when someone ask you: How are you? Dont just say I am fine then stop there. Speak with sincerity and put some context to your fineness. For Example: I am doing great because I just closed a BIG deal in San Francisco.

2) Offer help. You can always add values to someones life anytime anywhere. Offering help doesnt mean you have to spend hours of research and work overnight to make things happen. Send your new friends a thank you note with information you think they might be interested such as an intriguing article, shocking news or fun facts that could benefit them.

3) Business Cards. Always bring and offer your business cards. This does show your professionalism and you always seem prepared. If those who work for yourself; design a unique business card that make you stand out. (Check out Scott Ginsbergs How to Make Your Business Cards UNFORGETTABLE)

4) Write things down. After a good conversation, ask for their business card immediately and jot down how you can help. If the person didnt bring their business card, ask for their contact anyway and write things down on your notebook.

5) Set goal and practice. Set goal to meet someone new person every week. Networking does take work. The more you practice the more you will get better.

6) Follow Up. If you promise someone that you will send them info. Do it within the next 24 hours.

7) Be yourself at all time. You cannot pretend to be an angel at a cocktail party and become a bitch at Starbucks yelling at the barista. You never know who is behind you waiting in line.

To recap, the 7 Rules of Networking Made Easy

1. Ask Questions

2. Offer Help

3. Bring Business Cards

4. Write Things Down

5. Set Goal and Practice

6. Follow Up

7. Be Yourself at All Time

All of us are unique. We are all worthwhile individuals that everyone should meet and learn from. There are also great people on the street waiting for you to meet them. Have fun networking and turn the next stranger to your new best friend!

Networking …Not as Scary as It Sounds

Networking. What an overwhelming concept it can be at first. When starting up a business one marketing strategy is networking, when laid off and searching for employment one strategy is networking. You might be wondering what exactly networking is. Well, networking is: Interacting or engaging in informal communication with others for mutual assistance or support.

When I think of networking the first thing that comes to mind is I dont know anyone. Ok, I do know some people. So I get my pen an paper and eventually come up with a list of names of people. The next step of personal fear is when I go into the I dont want to impose on friends mode and find myself back at square one. Networking is not imposing. What you may consider imposing can turn out to be a win/win situation. If you are looking for a new position you may network with a friend that has a position open in her company. This company may have a referral award and if you get the job your friend gets a bonus. A nice word from a friend and a company may be filling an open position with a competent employee, you. As for businesses, you may have services the people you network with actually need and can benefit from. You may find the people you have chosen to network with may have services you can use as well. So free your inhibitions and network! Take this list and give them a call, be upbeat, let them know of your circumstance and move on to the next contact.

Where do you start? First take out a pen and paper and start listing friends and family. Add the ex co-workers. Do you patronize any business where you chat while doing business? (Example hairstylists, the person at the espresso bar you talk to while getting your morning coffee), college/alumni buddies, church or social activities? This list will get you started but dont stop there. Be creative. Do you go to PTA meetings? Collect business cards!

Second, be prepared. Keep a folder in the car of resumes or brochures. Keep a healthy stack of business cards with you. Develop a verbal presentation. If it is for employment, be creative and prepared in ways to approach the subject of possible openings. If it is business related, have a verbal description of what your business is and how you can (and have) benefit others. When you are at that hairstylist, during the course of a casual conversation you may bring up you were laid off (or you have a virtual assistant business) a simple May I leave my resume with you? If you hear of someone needing my qualifications you can pass it on (or business cards/brochures if networking for your business). Leads can come from the simplest of situations. Having your “marketing you” speech prepared will take most of the fear out of approaching others and make networking not such a scary concept.

You will find that most people are more then willing to help out. If you find someone who passes your information back, dont take it personally and move on to the next individual. Through your information someone else may benefit. It never hurts to ask, but you will never get a yes if you dont ask. You never know, the people on the list you are networking with may use you for their networking needs in the future, so get out and network today!

For Powerful Business Networking, Elevate Your Elevator Speech

For some reason, the term elevator speech makes me feel sleepy. These self-introductions tend to be dreary and boring. They follow a predictable fill-in-the-blanks pattern.

The first time someone explained the concept to me, he used Option 1: You know how stressed-out people get when theyre moving? Well, I have a three-step easy-move system…

Yawn.

Option 2 starts off more marketing oriented. I work with solo-preneurs who are struggling to sell themselves without sounding sales-y.

True. But Ive discovered a better way to tell my story…by telling a story.

Recently I met a financial consultant who opened with, I help clients manage money. For example, one client was a recently divorced woman who just suffered a devastating financial loss. She was afraid shed have to declare bankruptcy. Two years later, shes living in her own home and buying investment property…

Well, I may have gotten a few details wrong, but that was the gist of her story. Everyone in hearing distance leaned over to ask, Can I have your card?

So I went home and, just for fun, created some examples from my own experience.

For example, one client had a beautiful calling card website but all the revenue came from face-to-face networking events. We overhauled the website, added an e-course and created a section to showcase her services. Now the website brings in serious inquiries and occasionally a sale after a single phone call.

For example, I wrote a press release for an arts groups annual seminar. The story got picked up by the big city papers and a couple of suburban weeklies. We tripled attendance rates from the year before and the group had to go out and find a new meeting room.

No success stories? Too new?

For example, a client might come to me with a brilliant information product on a hot topic and a track record of zero. I would help the client discover hidden benefits, develop some bonuses and write a direct response sales letter that would bring in revenue almost immediately.

Isnt this a lot more fun than, I help people who…

After all, an elevator speech is copy, just like your web site and your sales letter.

Brand Yourself to Enhance Your Image in Networking Circles

You will meet many people while you network. It can be challenging not only for you to remember others but for others to remember you. You need to make yourself stand out in a positive way. You may get lost in the crowd if you dont take this seriously.

Be creative and try several ideas. Some will work better than others. Make sure you put in the appropriate amount of time to work on your image. You want to come across as a professional who cares about the ways others perceive you.

Focus on branding yourself rather than your company. If people think highly of you, they will think highly of your organization. As you move from company to company, you want people to remember you more than they remember your company.

Personalize Your Communication

Use a personal e-mail address that will serve as a permanent e-mail. One solution is to buy your own domain name for your last name or a combination of your first and last names. You can have this e-mail forwarded to whatever e-mail system you are using at work.

As an alternative, use an e-mail address created by services such as Yahoo! or Hotmail. Whatever e-mail you decide to use, make sure its easy for people to remember and make sure its professional.

By using a personal e-mail address, people will always be able to contact you no matter where you work. It can be difficult to let people know every time you change jobs.

Take it a step further and create a personal Web site using your own domain name. Not only should you brand yourself on this site with your qualifications and skills but also offer some valuable content. Try to make your site a resource for others in your industry or those who have a similar interest to you.

Create personalized note cards with your name (and e-mail address if you want to reinforce how to contact you). A stationary store can create these for you. This could include matching envelopes with your address.

These cards can be used to send handwritten notes to people for a number of reasons (such as a thank you for a job interview or business lead). You can also use these cards as a follow up after meeting someone at a networking event.

Personalized note cards will make you stand out because most people send e-mails or form letters. By taking the time to handwrite a note, it will show that you have made an effort to write a meaningful message.

Become a Subject Expert

Another great way for people to remember you is if you become a subject expert.

By showing your expertise on a certain topic, you will become a resource for others. When people start coming to you for resources and advice, you will know that you have done a good job of branding yourself. If people dont think highly of you, they wont use you as a resource or refer others to you.

One way to brand yourself as a subject expert is to create a Web site, which provides resources about your subject of interest. You need to let people know about this site by telling them when you meet them, handing out special business cards or mentioning it in some of the local list servs.

Your own electronic newsletter also helps. Your e-newsletter should focus on providing valuable content such as industry resources, articles, events and links. Try to personalize the newsletter by including original content such as tips, advice and articles.

Whenever you meet people, ask them if they want to be signed up for your newsletter. At the same time, make sure to have a sign-up box on your site so people can sign themselves up. Send out the newsletter regularly (either weekly, biweekly or monthly).

You want people to remember you. Stay in front of them.

Write regular articles for a local publication to show that you have expertise about a certain topic. Because it may take some time for a publication to accept your articles, be persistent and convince them that youre an expert. Tell them about your expertise and what you have already done (such as your Web site and newsletter).

Produce your own events to share your knowledge with people.

It doesnt matter what type of event you hold so long as you provide some value to attendees.

Final Thought

Its important that you pay attention to your personal image when you are networking.

Your firms image is important, too, but you need to make people remember you for the long term. Take the time and effort to develop your own brand. Because youre the first point of contact for people when you meet them, make sure to make yourself memorable.

How to Improve Communication Skills and Your Personal Style

Here are six tips for improving your communication style:

1. Knowing how to improve communication skills will come easier once you become aware of your own communication style.

Each person has a unique way of communicating. Listen to your own speech. What sorts of words do you use? Which sort of body language and what tone of voice are you using?

Now, think of someone who, in your opinion, is a good communicator. Compare your style to theirs. Youve just taken an important first step in how to improve communication skills.

2. Now that you are aware of your own style, study the style of those around you. How do the most important people in your life converse? How do they say things? Look for approaches you can model and make your own.

3. Adjust to the other styles of communication. Dont think it is too late to change your way of conversing because its been years. You had to learn to communicate in the first place and you can unlearn certain behaviors or change them. Sometimes we get stuck in a communication rut.

A father once was having a hard time with his teenaged daughter. She was growing and he thought she didnt tell him what was going on in her life. They were in a heated discussion when he asked, Why didnt you tell me?

Her answer was that she had, but he was too busy lecturing her to hear her. He learned that adjusting his style to his daughter would involve listening first before jumping right into solving the problem.

4. To build rapport, during a conversation try and match the other persons movements, posture and verbal style. Dont do everything they do, but mirror one or two things. For example, if the person gives mostly short answers to questions, you follow suit.

Or, maybe they talk at a slower pace than you usually do-slow your speaking speed to match theirs. This may sound simplistic but it is a very potent way to make someone feel very relaxed and comfortable in your presence.

5. The way you communicate at home may not be the same as in a different environment. Make sure you change your style to suit the different setting. Some comments you might want to tell your best friend, in private.

Other things can be shared in a group setting. Learn how to improve communication skills by altering your style for the appropriate setting. Many of us know someone who offers far too much information in a group setting.

6. Dont criticize others for communicating differently. If we all communicated in the same way, wed soon be bored with each other.

Getting a good grasp of your communication style and finding ways to accommodate other peoples styles, is a good way to improve your communication skills.

The Nuts & Bolts of Networking

Networking is a method that is used to build relationships. These relationships could be with classmates, co-workers, business partners, vendors, service providers and even family. We often attend family reunions where we meet new and distant relations. This is an excellent vehicle for networking. Networking is the process of discovering and using connections between people. Many of these connections actually stem from already established friendships and business relations. Networking is the ability to explore all of your relationships and utilize them to help you to move closer to your long-term goals.

Think of a computer network. You are the central server. Whenever you come across another server with information you wish to access, you need to build a connection with routers and cabling to reach the information contained on that server’s hard drive. The router is the method or the person who referred you to the new server and the cables are the relationship that was built between you and the new server in order to easily access that information.

Why is networking so important? Have you ever heard the phrase, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. Truer words were never spoken. By building positive relationships with a variety of people both in and out of your chosen career field, you may find a whole world of new opportunities that you can begin to explore. Networking is probably the most important skillset you can possess in your career, business and life in general. Networking allows you access to people and resources that you may not otherwise have had prior contact with. Through the proper use of networking skills, you will be in a position to weave your way through the intricate infrastructure of corporate America. For professional women, this could mean that the infamous “glass ceiling” could literally disappear. Your career options become limitless and getting your foot in the door becomes effortless.

Networking makes you visible to potential employers, your current management and other business connections. If you have a job where you’re stuck in a closed-in cubicle all day with little interaction with your co-workers, what is it that sets you apart from any other caged employee come time for annual review? Believe it or not, your performance is secondary to the attitude and personality that you display during those rare occasions that you do have the opportunity for some sort of social interaction. Almost every company participates in a form of employee appreciation to help promote corporate culture. These are usually company-sponsored events like department parties, holiday celebrations or summer picnics. Employees who actively participate in these types of events are much more likely to climb the corporate ladder and receive higher incremental raises than employees who never attend. This is because the actively participating employee shows his/her management that they are a team player, fully engaged in their commitment to their position which results in the building of a clearly visible and viable relationship.

Some other reasons learning to network is important are that you are can explore your chosen career and examine its outlook, connect with and learn from others in the industry, learn and start using industry-specific jargon and get support and additional leads and referrals to aid you in your job search. Networking can vastly narrow your target list of potential employers and help you to maintain employability in an uncertain job market.

So we know what networking is; now how do you do it? Networking is actually a lot easier than it seems. We do it every single day. When you nod your head to a stranger whom you have happened to have made eye contact with, or saying a casual hello to your neighbor or even smiling at the driver in the next car who is bopping his head to some beat; these are all examples of the very first stage of networking – greeting and acknowledgement. So in the first stage, you are simply establishing contact. Greet and acknowledge the person you are attempting to network with. “Hello”, “Good morning”, “Happy Friday!”, “Hey!”, “What’s up?” In whatever manner is the most appropriate given the situation and the person you are addressing, you must first establish that contact by acknowledging them with a greeting.

The second stage is the introduction. In this stage, you are exchanging information about one another in order to begin building a relationship. The introduction is the most crucial and the most difficult stage in the networking process. It is composed of several elements: the name exchange, the elevator speech and business card exchange. The name exchange sounds simple enough but you would be surprised by how many people actually forget to give the other person their name. So get into the habit of stating your name and position first whenever you meet someone new. “Hello, my name is Niquenya D. Fulbright and I’m an executive life coach and professional speaker.” Or “hello, my name is George and I work in real estate” or “Good morning, I’m Pat O’Hara. I’m an investment banker.” You should say this as clear and concise as possible. Be prepared to repeat or even spell difficult or uncommon names, especially in loud, crowded places. Also, if the other person doesn’t immediately offer their own name and title, make sure that you ask them “what is your name?”

Once you have exchanged names, you must then further build on the new relationship by telling the person why they should care to remember you. What do you do? Usually your job title isn’t clear enough to give people a good idea of what you really do. This is where an elevator speech becomes important. Your elevator speech is a minute or less introduction of you and your business or career. It should be interesting enough to capture their attention but not so detailed that there isn’t further room left for conversation. Also, you don’t want to go much longer than a minute as then it can become boring. Once you have delivered your elevator speech, you should then ask the other person, using their name, what it is they do? For instance, “okay, Claudia, so what do you do?” An example of a full introduction sounds like this, “hello, my name is Niquenya D. Fulbright and I’m an executive life coach and professional speaker. I specialize in motivating small business owners, entrepreneurs and individuals in a career or life transition to use their innate abilities to master their goals and achieve successes beyond their wildest dreams. I have a special passion for single working mothers because I am a member of that group. So, what is your name and what do you do?” You should write out a good elevator speech and practice it several times until it is committed to memory.

The final element of the introduction is the business card exchange. Before you break away from a successful contact, make sure that you request the other person’s business card and give them yours too. You should also write down a few key points from your conversation on the other person’s card. Some things that will be important are where you were when you met them and any personal information that could help you to identify who they are. If they mentioned they are married or have a few kids, this would be important to jot down for use in follow-up conversations.

The final stage of networking is follow-up. This is where you take all of the business cards that you have collected and send a quick email or snail mail letter to the individual. It should read something like “Hello Claudia, I really enjoyed meeting you at the annual Church Bizarre. It is so nice to meet someone else who is also interested in playing paintball. Maybe one day we can get together to build a team. We can even bring our kids. I know you said your daughter would definitely be interested. I actually know of an event coming up in April. I can forward you that information if you like. Please let me know if there is ever anything that I can do for you. I look forward to connecting with you again in the future, Sincerely Niquenya D. Fulbright.” At the end of your email or letter, make sure to include your signature with title, company and contact information. This is really important to maintain visibility in this new relationship. You should continue to send periodic quick notes to the other person over time. It is a good idea to notify them of special events and important updates about your own business too. Be careful not to spam your new contact by gaining their permission prior to sending out any frequently distributed newsletters or adding them to any mailing lists. You can even invite them out to a coffee or tea date to discuss mutually beneficial projects as well.

So you know what networking is and why it is important and I’ve even given you some ideas on how to do it. Now where do you start? First, join as many networking groups as possible. Organizations like the Chamber of Commerce, your local church or neighborhood community councils, political fundraisers and others are excellent forums for establishing new relationships and often host events specifically geared to this purpose. When choosing a networking group, rather online or offline, there are several factors you must consider. These include whether membership is free or by fee, the size of the group, its growth potential and the quality of contacts within the current member base. Pick and choose your groups based upon your intended purpose and whether it is a cost-effective solution based upon your budget.

Get into the habit of going through the networking stages everywhere you go, even at the bus stop. Participate in all company functions, be they holidays, birthdays, bowling, picnics or whatever. Volunteering is also a great way to build relationships through networking. Relationships are essential to life. No man is an island, therefore, without relationships, we can not breathe. Never discount a connection even if you can not see an immediate use for the new contact. The situation may change for either or both of you. It is not unlikely that this person could offer you a referral 5-10 years down the line. By maintaining follow-up contact, you are essentially doubling your own network by gaining access to theirs.

Make sure you reach out and touch someone today. Make a commitment to establishing 10 new contacts, 10 new connections, 10 new relationships each day. And follow-up!

MasterMind Groups That Change the World

Subscribing to the old adage two minds are better than one, mastermind groups employ the use of like-minded people who come together to challenge one another, create and implement objectives, and to brainstorm ideas in order to support each other in the pursuit of a common goal. Like rungs on a ladder, each member of a mastermind group aids and sustains the others in his or her climb towards their objective.

Mastermind groups were formerly introduced by Napoleon Hill, an American author and one of the first pioneers of the self help genre. His book Think and Grow Rich is one of the best selling of all time. Hill states that mastermind groups are the coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work towards a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.

Although Hill may have been the first to coin the term mastermind group these kinds of assemblies have been in effect throughout the existence of humanity. Socrates academy fits the definition as does Jesus and his twelve disciples. The Great Pyramid builders would also have been a mastermind group. Using the skills of architects, astronomers, mathematicians, scientists, designers and a force of four thousand general laborers, these builders used the strengths of many to reach their famous and impressive goal.

In the early 1700s, Ben Franklin purveyed one of the most socially relevant mastermind groups of that time. Commonly called the Leather Apron Club and officially termed the Junto, this group of young men who had no financial or social advantages, met weekly to discuss subjects such as philosophy, morals, economics and politics. It was comprised of enterprising tradesmen and artisans who adhered to the belief that each of them had something to teach and to learn. The group was in effect for forty years and eventually became the American Philosophical Society, the works of which are still evident today. The group was responsible for the implementation of the first public library, volunteer fire departments, the first public hospital, police departments, and even paved streets.

In the early 1920s, six men in Chicago (later referred to as the Big 6) formed a group that met once a week over dinner. At the time their names would have been unimportant, today we know that each of them went on to be hugely successful; thanks largely in part to the company they kept, proving that like-minded, goal-oriented individuals can radically influence each others success. The members included Charles Wrigley (the owner of the Wrigley chewing gum company), William Hertz and William Ritchie (the founders of the Yellow Cab Company), Albert Lasker (the owner of the Lord and Thomas Ad Agency (which was at that time, the largest ad agency in the world), John R. Thompson (the owner of a chain of successful lunch rooms) and Andrew Carnegie (who amongst other impressive endeavors, founded and owned the Carnegie Steel Company, a business that was worth millions). These men adhered to Napoleon Hills belief that When a group of individual brains are co-coordinated and function in harmony, the increased energy created through that alliance becomes available to every individual brain in the group.

Other mastermind groups include Presidents and their advisors, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, Walt Disney and his brother Roy, and Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Being famous however, is not a prerequisite; consider a group of students studying together for finals or a board of directors meeting.

Organizing a mastermind group is relatively simple. The key factor is to establish a protocol before the group is formed. Ask yourself what it is that you would like to achieve and then turn your attention to the people who you believe can help you attain that goal. Each member requires his or her own personal or business mission to accomplish and, the time in which to devote to that objective. Each persons participation is essential, whether the members meet in person or via telephone or on line. Peers give feedback, brainstorm new possibilities and set up accountability guidelines that keep the meetings focused. In addition, it is important that the participants trust one another implicitly in order to create an environment that is safe and non-judgmental. Gary Ralston, a senior business consultant at Ralston Consulting in Ohio says, Trust deepens as the group forms. Confidentiality, like a water-tight bond, is the most important part of mastermind groups.

Mastermind groups come in all forms and sizes. Consider the largest mastermind group of all. It has 1.2 million members in the Unites States alone and more than 2 million worldwide. Founded by two men, Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Watson in Akron, Ohio in 1935, the organization consists of more than 105,000 groups who adhere to the same set of guidelines and principles in order to reach a common goal. The members share their experiences with one another in the quest to solve their common problem. The goal? Sobriety. The group? Alcoholics Anonymous.

Perhaps the strength and potential of mastermind groups can be summed up best through the words of well-known cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Keith MacLean is taking the MasterMind concept to a new level never seen before with the globally connected http://www.20minds.com bringing together achievers who want to not only succeed, but make a real difference. He thanks the wonderful and talented freelance writer Julie Henry for her help with this article.

How to Announce a New Product

How can the introduction of new products affect the way I network at meetings?

When I have a new product to launch, I make sure that I have a 20 to 30 second pitch ready for the next networking event I attend. I also make sure that I have a supply of product announcements offering a free sample. As I work through the crowd, I make sure that I am talking to a person that could use my product, by listening carefully to what they have to say, and if the product does not fit I go on to the next conversation.

The important thing to remember is that you should not force your product onto everyone you talk to. You have a job to listen intently to what they have to say and then make a judgment as to the fit of what you have to offer. Sales of new products are not made or broken through networking events, they are simply introduced so that the next time an event occurs and you have product to display, some attendees will be aware of your offering. The best thing is to make sure that you are excited about your product or service, you are an expert in the field, and that you are able to deliver what is promised. All three need to be present while attending an event and making the product introduction. If one item is missing, the product is not likely to be well accepted.

Sometimes a networking event will allow participants to have a display booth. In that case, you should make sure that you have a table or share one and offer tests or trial sizes with feedback forms. It is one thing to give out the product; it is another thing to get feedback on its application. Never give out anything without having a way to contact the potential product user.
