Certified Diamonds
Certified diamonds are by definition, polished diamonds that are provided with a detailed report noting details that are specific to that particular stone. This report has to be produced within an internationally recognised laboratory of which there are several worldwide. The report examines such details as the shape, dimensions, proportions and any characteristics unique to that stone such as fluorescence. Some reports are less detailed than others. This is because most laboratories issue different types of report. For a small diamond, (under 1ct) a full certificate is not necessary. For a 1ct report, where the cost represents a much smaller proportion of the stone cost, a full report with diamond diagram is usual. This diagram will show any internal or external flaws present on the diamond.
We will outline here, some of the main laboratories in use for certified diamonds. There are others, but these are the main companies involved with the certification of gemstones.
AGS - the American Gem Society
GIA - The Gemological Institute of America
IGI - The International Gemological Institute
HRD - Hoge Raad voor Diamant
All of the reports can vary enormously and it can be a little bit staggering when you start looking at the details. It is always advisable to speak to a specialist who can explain what each part of the certificate means. Certain details take little explanation. Details such as the proportions for example. There are often two measurements for the diameter provided. This is because it will not be exactly the same all the way round, and so the smallest and largest measurement is provided. To us though, the difference is negligible.
The shape will also be noted. Commercial names are not used, so a Princess cut will often be described as a square modified brilliant. Also, in addition to this, the proportions, symmetry, polish and finish are usually looked at. Very often we find a score for how well the diamond is cut (especially on newer GIA certificates) This can vary greatly and it is always advisable to purchase a diamond with a cut grade of good or above.
Certified diamonds basically provide a kind of blueprint of the diamond. This in turn provides reassurance to the customer that they are truly getting the quality described on the piece of jewellery. It is always advisable to buy from a trusted source. The British Jewellers Association provides details of jewellers who are members, many of which specialise in certified diamonds.
