Is There An Opal Birthstone?

Traditionally the opal birthstone is assigned to the month of October. The earliest record of this symbolic attribution to the month of October is found in the biblical Breastplate of Aaron. The breastplate of Aaron was a ritual garment that assigned the meaning of twelve precious stones to the twelve months of the year and the twelve tribes of Israel. For this reason, if you are Jewish then the opal is a great stone for you to wear no matter what day your birthday falls on.

In astrology the opal symbolizes the moon. The metal silver also equates to the celestial symbol of the moon. For this reason, people who are pagan or interested in the occult often wear opal and silver jewelry that symbolizes the Earth Goddess holding up a opal disk that represents the moon.

As far as the symbolism of the zodiac goes the opal traditionally does not represent any particular sign. The black and red opals are sometimes associated with the sign of Scorpio. However there does not seem to be any real historical precedent for the Scorpio relationship to the black opal birthstone except for the efforts modern day marketing to give the stone some kind of selling angle and the fact that red and black are colors associated with the lusty and warrior like nature of Scorpio.

However the fact that tradition does not dictate it as correct does not mean you cannot wear an opal birthstone. The high crystalline purity of white opals is suitable for the more emotionally cold and intellectual astrological signs such as Capricorn, Virgo, Gemini and Sagittarius. Blue opals are suited to imaginative and whimsical signs such as Aquarius and Libra. Their blueness, which symbolizes water, is also good for the signs ruled by water such as Cancer and Pisces. The dark red and black opals are best suited for earth signs such as Taurus and Scorpio. The brilliant and flashy orange Mexican varieties make good opal birthstones for the astrological signs ruled by fire such as Aries and Leo.
